What makes a tile pattern "custom"?

A straight-lay or brick-set pattern starts from a corner and runs. A custom pattern doesn't — it starts from a focal point and works outward, which means the layout has to be planned entirely before any tile is set. Herringbone and chevron require every perimeter piece to be individually cut at an angle. Mosaic and inlay work requires the surrounding field tile to be cut to receive it, so the border sits flush and the grout lines align. Mixed-material designs need the thickness difference between materials accounted for in the setting bed, or the surface ends up uneven. None of this is difficult in principle. All of it takes time, and all of it shows immediately when it's rushed — which is why pattern work is where the gap between a careful installer and a fast one is most obvious.

Does a herringbone or chevron pattern cost more to install?

Yes, and the difference is labor rather than materials. A herringbone layout typically generates substantially more cuts than a straight lay over the same square footage, and every one at the perimeter is angled. Chevron is more demanding still, since each tile is mitered so the points meet in a continuous line — any drift is visible across the whole wall. The material cost also rises modestly, because angled cuts produce more waste, so the order needs a larger overage than a straight lay would. The result is a room that reads as clearly custom rather than standard. If pattern work is what you want, it's worth budgeting for the labor honestly rather than discovering the difference partway through the quote.
