Why is my shower tile coming loose?

Water got behind it. That's nearly always the answer. The three usual paths are failed waterproofing behind the tile, grout that cracked and went unsealed, or old silicone at the corners and the tub line that let water track behind the wall. Once water reaches the backer board, the board softens, loses its grip on the thinset, and the tile lets go — usually starting near the floor or at a corner, and usually spreading. Whether it's repairable depends entirely on what the substrate looks like once a tile comes off. If the board is still sound and only a few tiles have released, it's a straightforward repair. If the board is soft across a larger area, patching it hides the problem rather than fixing it, and the failure keeps spreading behind the new tile.

What's the difference between regrouting and replacing tile?

Regrouting removes the old grout from between the tiles and replaces it, leaving the tile itself in place. It's the right fix when the tile is sound and bonded but the grout has cracked, stained or gone crumbly — which is common in showers eight to fifteen years old. It's substantially less work and less cost than a retile. Replacing tile is necessary when the tile itself is cracked, when tiles have come loose because the substrate behind them failed, or when the waterproofing underneath is compromised. The honest test is what's behind the tile, not what the grout looks like — good-looking grout over a failing membrane is a problem waiting, and bad-looking grout over a sound wall is a one-day job.

Can you match my existing tile?

Sometimes. If the tile is a current product still in production, matching it is usually possible. If it's ten or twenty years old, an exact match is unlikely — dye lots shift even within the same product line, and discontinued tile is discontinued. When an exact match isn't available, the options are a close match that most people won't notice once grouted, sourcing leftover tile if any was stored (worth checking the basement and garage before assuming it's gone), or making the repair a deliberate feature rather than hiding it. Should I reseal my grout, and how often?

If your grout is cement-based and unsealed, yes — sealing slows staining and reduces how readily water passes through the grout lines. Roughly annually in a shower, less often on a floor that doesn't get wet. Epoxy grout doesn't need sealing at all. Sealing is genuinely worth doing and it's something most homeowners can handle themselves with a bottle from a hardware store and an afternoon. What sealing will not do is fix a shower that's already leaking behind the tile — sealer is maintenance, not a repair, and using it to chase an active leak just delays the real fix while the damage continues.
